RaceAcrossUSA Kicks off today-January 16, 2015
About The Race
Beginning this morning in California, an international team of athletes will take on a 4 1/2 month journey, running the equivalent of 117 back-to-back marathons across the United States. The race organizers have plans to end at the White House with the goal of inspiring a healthier generation.
The Race Across USA is a 140-day stage race across the USA to raise awareness about childhood obesity and “inactivity”, to raise money for the 100 Mile Club® and to sign up as many schools as possible along the way. This event starts in Huntington Beach, CA and ends in Washington,DC.
More on the Cause-Awareness for Childhood Obesity
According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At the present time, 12.5 million children, ages 6-19 in the United States are obese. Many more are overweight.
How to Get Involved
The Core Team: Who Are They?
The international team of core runners that will take on this 3,080 mile trek include three women and thirteen men. The oldest runner is Newton Baker, age 73. The youngest, Alex Ramsey, age 29.
About the 100 Mile Club®
The 100 Mile Club® is a national, school-based program with the goal to run or walk 100 miles during a school year. The program also teaches kids life skills, goal setting, and self-esteem while making physical activity a healthier habit for life. Proceeds from the Race Across USA event will directly sponsor students and program implementation in new and currently participating schools. Those kids who join accept the goal of running (or walking) 100 miles at school during a single school year. It now has members in over 700 schools in nearly every US State as well as three other countries – Canada, New Zealand and Japan!
More information about the 100 Mile Club® can be found at http://www.100mileclub.com.
[Personal sidebar] I am impressed with each and every of the runners stories and am behind their efforts 100% to do more to raise awareness on childhood obesity and inactivity. I’ve written much about this topic over the years, including offering an online nutrition course for parents and schools as well as authoring an Amazon best selling book in preventive medicine, Body in Balance. My book gives back a portion of proceeds from sales to build on awareness for kids nutrition and the need to educate our young Bright Minds with a university quality nutrition education before they get to college. I am partnering and volunteering with RaceAcrossUSA to help spread the word, so please share this news with your own community and get involved. I have also agreed to follow and report on the research on the biological and behavioral responses to extreme physical activity which the runners will be collecting.*

Featuring Race Across USA runner Bryce Carlson
*This was a radio interview at Perdue with one of the core runners, Bryce Carlson who is also conducting research on human performance and how the body will adapt to this grueling event. The extreme endurance event could provide insight into how the rest of us mere mortals can better cope with the trials and tribulations of more moderate exercise, the scientists said.
